Oils 101

A few tips for those who have oils and want to know where to start.

First, it's important to remember the following:

"Early and Often"
  • Oils are therapeutic in nature, so while they sometimes create immediate results, they will often take some time and are not always as fast acting as meds, but so much better in the long run for your body.  Applying only once or twice and then giving up to say "these oils don't work is not practical. Our family best success has been had when oils are applied:
    • Early -  To fight off illness, apply the antiviral oils (e.g., Thieves, Oregano) as soon as you feel something coming on (think like Airborne)
    • Often - For success treating symptoms you will need to use them often. The amazing thing about the oils is, using them often is actually helping repair your cells... unlike pharmaceuticals that process through your liver and kidneys!
  • Give a remedy a few days before bailing on it.  Remember you never took one dose of cough medicine or one dose of any other medicine and threw in the towel when you did not see immediate results!
Not all symptoms are the same!
  • There are many reasons for headaches, and for stomach issues, etc.  Don't give up, continue to try different oils until you find one that works for you.
  • We became overwhelmed fast, be sure to focus on one symptom and remedy at a time. Below  are some easy tips from people who are using Young Living Essential oils.

Favorite "everyday" go-to remedies:

  • In general, any oil labeled as a 'dietary supplement' on the bottle can be swiped in the mouth for quicker absorption and relief.  Just beware the "hot" oils - they may burn for a second. :)  A few examples of what works well for our family:
  • First sign of any illness or expected exposure:
    • Kids:  Lather the feet in Thieves mixed with coconut oil; Diffuse Thieves
    • Adults:  Put a drop of Thieves on our thumb and press it to the roof of our mouth, wipe excess on inside of cheek (it will burn for a second, totally normal!)
  • First sign of runny nose/cold symptoms:
    • Kids:  Lather the feet in diluted Thieves and RC; Diffuse Thieves & Purification; Lavender across the bridge of their nose; diluted Lemon on lymph nodes to promote drainage; P&C on chest for cough
    • Adults:  RC/Thieves on feet; Diffuse Thieves & Purification; Capsule: 1 drop Thieves, 2 drops Peppermint; 2 drops Lemon or Orange.
  • Itchy eyes, runny nose:
    • Kids:  Lavender across forehead and under nose.  Works great to do this before going outside to avoid the symptom all together!
    • Adults:  Swipe of Lavender inside the cheek (tastes nasty but works so quick) or apply to forehead and sinus cavities.
    • Everyone: Diffuse Lavender, Lemon and Peppermint
  • Headache:
    • Adults: Drop of peppermint on thumb and pressed to the roof of the mouth for quickest relief.  Also apply it topically to the location of the headache and the nape of the neck.
    • Not total relief or serious headache?  Try Frankincense topically on head, Valor on big toe and follow both with Peppermint.  As I understand it, and from my experience, Peppermint 'chases' the other oils in faster.
    • Diffuse Peppermint
  • Bug Bites:
    • Kids & Adults:  Diluted Purification to pull out the bite and reduce the swelling (almost immediately - amazing!).
  • Tummy Ache/Nausea:
    • Kids: Diluted DiGize on tummy (Still can't believe this one).  Diluted Thieves on feet.
    • Adults: Diluted DiGize in capsule, on stomach, or in a shot of milk.  Peppermint under nose (you can just sniff the bottle first, then apply a bit if that doesn't provide enough relief).  Thieves on feet.
  • Fever:
    • Kids over 18 mths & Adults: Diluted Peppermint on lymphnodes under arms.  Diluted Thieves on feet layered with diluted Peppermint.  Apply OFTEN until the fever comes down.  Usually takes no more than an hour.  This several has great sucsess!
    • Adults:  Add a capsule of Thieves and Oregano with a carrier (see the link to Internal use of oils above) to knock out what is causing the fever.
  • Constipation:
    • Diluted Oregano on feet. Apply morning and night for regulation or more often if there is a  issue.
